That’s where the magic lives. Here’s what 15+ years behind the lens has taught me: Movement = Unscripted Laughter: Walking (or running) side-by-side unlocks moments you can’t recreate in a studio. Kids get to run wild, partners get to lean into each other, and the rhythm of the trail becomes the rhythm of your story. Vulnerability = Real Connection: Being outside together—a little breathless, boots a little muddy—strips away the performance. You don't have to put on a show; you just get to be, together. The Landscape = Your Shared Memory: A trail isn't just a generic backdrop. It's the place where your toddler found that "perfect" pinecone, or where you two stopped to take in the view. The weather tried to throw a plot twist with storms the day before, but the clouds cleared just in time for a perfect day. While the grand backdrop of the gardens was stunning, the best parts of the night lived in the unscripted moments—the quiet, honest details that make a story whole. The Fellowship: Their cats, Atlas and Moose, made a legendary appearance for portraits. The Nostalgia: Xander’s brother cracked everyone up during the toasts by reading off the titles of fantasy stories Xander wrote as a teenager. No adjustments are made for the image that would make the dish inedible. 2. Food safety protocols are used the entire time. 3. Limit waste while cooking, prepping, and styling. 4. When we get the images, its packaged up and held at the correct temperature until we're done. 5. We load it up and deliver it to those that could really use a good, hot meal. 6. I’ve been a bit quiet on here the last few days. I I’ve been a bit quiet on here the last few days. It was my birthday on Friday and, honestly, I’ve just been completely all over the place celebrating and catching my breath. But while I’ve been offline sorting through the happy chaos of another year around the sun, the real work doesn't stop. The YWCA is still out there every single day doing the heavy lifting, helping people navigate some of the hardest chapters of their lives. They need to stay the course, and they need our help to keep doing it for as many families as possible. My fundraising campaign for them ends on July 31st. We get so caught up in the rush of the everyday—the endless to-do lists, the screen time, the constant hustle—that we forget to just stop and breathe. We forget that adventure isn't always across an ocean; sometimes, it’s just a freeway away, hidden along a road you've driven numerous times. When some friends booked a Hobbit Hole vacation up in Woodland, Washington, I knew I had to unplug and pack my bags. Because truest magic is almost always found in the smallest, unscripted moments of human connection. It rained, of course. A steady, grey drizzle that blurred the treeline. But instead of dampening the mood, it just made the world feel a little more intimate. We set up a canopy, got a firepit roaring, and spent the hours huddled together, trying to solve a deeply frustrating (but incredibly fun) murder mystery puzzle while we just chilled. There was no chasing the "perfect" moment. There was just the smell of woodsmoke, the sound of rain on canvas, and the chaotic, beautiful laughter of people who love hanging out with each other just being present. Nervousness in front of the camera isn't a flaw. It's human. And it's my job to create an environment where you can feel that nervousness and still be fully, unapologetically yourself. In practice, that looks like: ✨ Conversation before clicking-I want to know what brings you joy, what makes you laugh, what you're excited or scared about. The camera can wait. ✨ Acknowledging the nerves out loud-not pretending they don't exist, but naming them. "I see you. This is vulnerable. You're doing great." ✨ Building rituals and rhythm-breaks when you need them, a steady presence, maybe a terrible joke or two. Something that says: you're safe here. For the last two weekends, I’ve stepped away from the camera to pour my energy into working the booths for Clark County Pride. It has been a beautiful, busy whirlwind of community connection, resource sharing, and showing up for the folks who need to know they belong. Every year, watching our community march across the La Center bridge reminds me of why I chose this path. Missy made my daughter’s senior photo shoot a truly joyful experience. She’s not only an exceptionally talented photographer but also has a gift for drawing out genuine smiles, even from the most nervous subjects. My daughter is incredibly camera shy and was worried she’d look “awkward,” but from the moment we met Missy, she was at ease. I’m so glad we chose the package with all the digital images—Missy captured so many stunning shots, I couldn’t have chosen just a few.
